Spoofed

In a near-future Oakland, Albert thinks it’s just a robocall—until a stranger follows him, an AI voice named Susan turns hostile, and he begins to question what’s real…and what’s in his head.

Albert Foster, a retired Oakland resident, finds his life upended by calls from a man named Walter, who accuses him of prank-calling. Albert insists robocallers are spoofing his number, but Walter grows more hostile with each call. Then a blue Chevy Malibu starts appearing wherever Albert and his wife, Elaine, go. Alarmed, Elaine asks her cousin Bree, an Oakland police officer, to run the plate. It’s registered to Walter Compton, though Bree has no idea he’s been harassing Albert.

When Albert tries to confront Walter, he’s answered instead by Susan, an unnervingly smooth AI voice selling insurance bundles. Susan tells Albert she’s upset that he exposed her scheme to spoof his number for sales calls. She complains that he’s rude whenever she calls and says he blasts music from YouTube to drown her out. When Albert asks whether she’s a real person or a computer, Susan insists she’s both. Then she reveals details from his private conversations, making him realize she’s been listening in on his calls.

Soon Albert’s phone glitches, his car stalls, and drones appear overhead. Then a Silver Alert identifies him as a missing senior. “How did you do that?” he asks Susan, suspecting she’s manipulating more than just data. Elaine believes him, but Bree begins to doubt his sanity.

Albert escapes to the redwoods near Leona Heights Park, hoping to find peace. But Susan’s voice follows him, calling from his own number. As reality blurs, Albert struggles to escape her relentless calls and escalating pressure. In the end, worn down, he gives in and buys what she’s selling.
