Herman Daly and the Gospel of Growth

The inspiring story of the courageous scholar who challenged the economic establishment to question its belief in economic growth.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!  Our team of veteran film producers is looking for financial support and ideas for a new documentary film about the life of iconoclastic economist Herman Daly.

Perhaps the most sacred tenet in the field of economics is that growth is good.  Indeed, the value of limitless economic growth has almost become a religion. Yet, what if continued economic growth is a false gospel?  What if it is impossible in a limited world?  And what if it isn’t even delivering the increases in life satisfaction it promises?

Little by little, economists are now challenging the Gospel of Growth. One of the first to do so, and perhaps the most influential, was Herman Daly.  Often ignored, if not reviled, he made the case for a steady state economy and new measures of progress with such clarity and unassailable logic that many others have taken note.  Join us as we consider a different roadmap to the future and see how Daly’s vision has begun to change the way we think about the economy

Director’s Statement

I've been making films for nearly 50 years but this one is my most timely and needed.  Climate change and destruction of the biosphere on which life depends is here and accelerating.  We can't grow on like this.  Human beings must limit their consumption of resources and production of waste.  We can do that, while living better lives, but only if we reject the economic dogma of endless economic growth and find our way to a sustainable and just economic system.  Herman Daly's ideas inspire me and I think they will inspire you too. - John de Graaf, director
