He That Digs a Pit
An Ausländer in Berlin enacts morbid revenge against a bad roommate, and unwittingly summons a demon from hell.
Since the rise of Brecht’s Epic Theater in the early 20th century, the technique has been used to provoke reflection over escapism, social critique over sentimental catharsis. He That Digs A Pit draws from this lineage, merging social realism with supernatural horror to examine modern-day alienation, expat identity, and the seductive danger of vengeance in a gentrifying Berlin.
Set almost entirely within the bleak interior of Aldo’s Berlin apartment, the story follows a Scottish expat as he plots a bizarre form of retribution: catfishing his ex-roommate on a gay dating app using the persona of the man’s deceased father. But Aldo’s psychological gambit opens a portal into the uncanny — frogs, black mold, and ghostly visitations mark his descent into paranoia, culminating in an encounter with a demon. Voices echo from above like political unrest bleeding through the walls, while time distorts, warps, and ultimately collapses under the weight of guilt.
The film unfolds with the brooding emotionality of Sturm und Drang, yet it’s presented with formal restraint — a dialectic of intensity and detachment, questioning whether our private hauntings are ever truly separate from the world around us.
