Filmmakers Collaborative SF has produced many projects touching on subjects as diverse as domestic violence, education, Middle East politics, environmental issues, women's issues, and cultural studies. No matter the topic, we approach each project with the goal of creating public awareness through thoughtful storytelling that offers a balanced presentation of issues and ideas. In turn, this can lead to changes in attitudes and policies.
We have a proven track record of achieving results. For example, Michal Aviad's award-winning film Acting Our Age also encompassed a comprehensive outreach campaign that helped create considerable awareness regarding the issues facing women as they reach their senior years. Kevin White's Not All Parents Are Straight was one of the first documentaries broadcast to a national audience that profiled the challenges facing children being raised by gay and lesbian parents. The result was exceptional carriage and extensive viewer feedback. Michal's film The Women Next Door, was distributed and broadcast both nationally and internationally - helping to create awareness of the issues facing women on both sides of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.
Sometimes it is not a question of how many eyeballs you reach, but who to reach. For example, in our How On Earth video series we have three films, Restoring Balance, Returning Home, and From the Ground Up, that have been broadcast extensively on PBS and distributed throughout many environmental and government organizations to raise awareness about the benefits of environmental restoration. But often the most critical viewing was when the scientists behind the restoration efforts can sit down with legislators or resource managers to explain the success of their projects succinctly and efficiently in a video. The results have translated into secured funding to facilitate additional restoration efforts.
We believe that if you can tell the public compelling, thoughtful stories – and then provide them with tools for further inquiry and participation – you can make a impact. In turn, an informed public will be in a better position to take enlightened action in the years ahead.
