Fair Fight in the Marketplace is being produced by filmmakers Kevin White and David Donnenfield on behalf of the American Antitrust Institute. The film is educational and informative in nature, and will be broadcast on PBS. The film's goal is to inform the public of the function and importance of antitrust laws and their role in ensuring that consumers have fair pricing, product choices, product innovation, and, ultimately, a vibrant economy.
The film will provide some historical context of antitrust laws and explain what anti-competitive business practices the laws target. It will also cover some recent examples of the laws' application, such as the Archer Daniels Midland/Lysine case, the Mylan Pharmaceuticals case, and the Microsoft case. In all cases, it will strive to personalize the implications of antitrust enforcement by highlighting how violations of the law impact businesses and consumers. Content will be delivered in a fair and balanced presentation. Recognized experts in the field will provide commentary where appropriate. The film will strive to highlight both sides of a case to air issues so that viewers can arrive at their own conclusions.
The film's budget is provided by settlement money obtained by the state of California through antitrust enforcement. The project also contains an educational outreach plan designed and implemented by Street Law of Washington D.C. This will include production of a DVD complete with curriculum material for high schools and community colleges, as well as a web site and other outreach materials. The goal is to provide compelling tools for educators that can be used to increase consumer education and civic literacy.
The American Antitrust Institute is an independent Washington-based non-profit education, research, and advocacy organization.
